Plans to introduce a fixed sliding gate on Tenby harbour pier during holiday season are in the pipeline to help combat instances of anti-social behaviour and safety concerns at the locality.<br/>Local authorities took the decision over the Whitsun holiday period last year to close off a section of the harbour pier at high tides, after serious safety concerns resurfaced with the volume of youngsters and people jumping in the water causing risk of injury from vessel movements within the harbour.<br/>Anti-social behaviour concerns were also raised, with teenagers congregating down the pier, drinking and then diving in the sea, with some choosing to climb onto nearby premises to gain higher vantage points to jump from. The move was also designed to combat ‘boy racers’ parking up at the picturesque spot during the evenings.<br/> Tenby Harbour User's Association members recently had it confirmed to them at a meeting that a design is in process for a fixed sliding gate at the pier. <br/>In the mean time Heras fencing will return in May to ensure the working pier is not compromised in 2024. This will again be manned by Tenby boatmen and the harbourmaster.

As Storm Kathleen passes causing relatively little disruption, it appears Storm Lilian is just around the corner, with more wet and windy weather forecast for Pembrokeshire and West Wales this week.<br/>Surfers seen in the video were out trying to catch that special wave on Saturday evening, with a high swell on Tenby's North Beach, as Storm Kathleen came in.<br/>The Met Office has a warning in place from 1am to 3pm for Tuesday, April 9, with strong winds of up to 65mph predicted, that could bring hazardous coastal conditions to parts of Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire.<br/>‘Storm Kathleen arrived on Saturday to match the record for most named storms in a season, marking a hyperactive season so far,’ - states website www.weatherandradar.co.uk<br/>‘When Kathleen arrived in the UK and Ireland, it didn't just deliver strong gales across the countries but became just the second named storm ever beginning with the letter K.<br/>‘Not since 2016 have we reached the letter K in a single storm season, Kathleen joins Storm Katie in the history books…for now.<br/>‘During the 2022/23 storm season, we saw just two named storms, which both arrived during the final month of the season. <br/>‘By comparison, this season, we are at 11 named storms with just under five months left until the season ends with the close of August.<br/>‘When, or if, we do see another named storm in that time it will become Storm Lilian and officially mark the most active storm season on record for the UK and Ireland since the practice of naming storms began.’

The annual operation to crane the boats back into Tenby harbour waters took place today, on a misty morning at the seaside town.<br/>The sight of the vessels being lifted back into the sea, traditionally draws spectators viewing from vantage points around the picturesque harbour, and is seen as a date in the calendar to mark the official start of the holiday season in the seaside town, despite the lift this year falling after the Easter holidays.<br/>The lift was due to take place on Wednesday, but owing to the windy weather and a large sea swell, the operation was rescheduled for Thursday, April 11, with crane arriving at Tenby harbour at around 5 am, and the exercise completed by late morning.<br/>With the weather being so choppy over the past couple of weeks, boats over to Caldey Island haven’t been able to run as frequently, since the Island opened for the season last month.<br/>Ahead of the lift - the annual ‘Blessing of The Boats’ service took place at St Julian’s Church (known as the ‘little church on the harbour’) last month.<br/><br/>Pics: @Gareth Davies Photography<br/>Video: @Tenby Observer

Funding avenues are being sought to seek improvements to Tenby harbour’s sluice.<br/>Works to make the sluice more 'user-friendly' were given the thumbs up by town councillors prior to Covid, with members being told of an application from Pembrokeshire County Council for the replacement of stop logs with sluice control, which would ‘protect and enhance’ the area, as well as sustaining activities; improve the amenity of the harbour, and sustain local employment opportunities.<br/>However, funding for the project seemingly slipped through the net, and the plans never came to fruition.<br/>The sluice gate was discussed recently again at a meeting of Tenby Harbour User's Association, with the chair of the group providing PCC with all relevant paperwork to start the process of looking for new sources of funding to pursue. <br/>Members heard that community support for this project remained strong; and it was proposed that known engineering firms be invited to complete a design and guide price to include a structural sign off to establish a required funding budget.
