One in three Brits 'hate' unexpected phone calls and a quarter rarely or never answer them.

A poll of 2,000 adults found 31 per cent ‘panic’ when the phone rings - especially if it’s from an unknown number or someone they haven’t heard from in a while.

As many as 40 per cent prefer to know when someone is going to ring them, and half simply won’t pick up a call that they’re not expecting.

But for anyone planning to ring someone without pre-warning, try doing it in the afternoon – as it’s the time people are most likely to actually pick up.

The study was commissioned by Buffalo Trace Distillery [www.BuffaloTraceDistillery.co.uk] ahead of the opening its first store outside of the USA, on 6th May.

The whiskey brand also turned an iconic British phone box green in Covent Garden and challenged passers-by to answer a call from inside, with those who dared to pick up the phone getting an exclusive tasting experience.

Andrew Duncan, global brand director for the brand, said: “It’s clear spontaneity is becoming a lost art form.

“And we think that’s a shame because many of life’s greatest experiences happen when one commits to living what we like to call perfectly untamed – bolder, more daring, and less afraid of the unknown.

“We believe fortune favours the bold, and picking up the phone has the potential to result in some amazing adventures.”

The study also found nearly 37 per cent are less likely to pick up an unexpected call now than they were five years ago.

Although while 30 per cent of men prefer to plan everything in their lives and could never do something spontaneously, only 23 per cent of women felt the same.

Similarly, 72 per cent of women are more likely to answer the phone from an unknown number, compared to 57 per cent of men.

And 12 per cent said it’s been a week or longer since they spoke to someone on the phone – with some not even remembering the last time.

Instead, 26 per cent prefer to communicate via social media rather than using their voice on a phone line.

But the research, carried out via OnePoll, found 23 per cent of those who have answered a call they weren’t expecting revealed it led to something surprisingly good.

Andrew Duncan added: “As communication moves more online, it’s natural to feel less comfortable with picking up the phone when it rings, but there really is no substitute for tangible moments of connection with others.

“We wanted to remind people that sometimes, the unexpected call can lead to simple but important delights, like spending quality time with friends and family.

“Unexpected moments shared over a glass of whiskey are, unsurprisingly, some of our favourites.”

Stunning pictures show a couple’s spectacular ‘four seasons’ garden bursting with spring colours – hidden in the industrial heartland of the Black Country.

Tony Newton, 74, and wife Marie, 76, have devoted 42 years and more than £15,000
transforming their ordinary suburban garden into an idyllic oasis.

Their garden in Walsall, West Mids., features more than 3,000 plants and flowers, including 450 azalea, 120 Japanese maples, 15 juniper blue stars.

Locals have nicknamed the stunning garden ‘four seasons’ after the couple deliberately planted different flowers to bloom all year round.

The green-fingered couple spend up to eight hours every day maintaining the quarter-of-an-acre plot which attracts visitors from around the world.

Marie said: “Over the years we’ve had a lot of interest. Someone flew in from New York.

“We’ve had a lot of Chinese tourists. We’ve been all over the world.

“We had a couple of Chinese girls come down from Sheffield on a landscape course. Back in China they’d heard even about us.

“We used to open the garden once a year to the public but we now share it with just family and friends.”

Marie started gardening as a hobby after she retired from her job as a transport planner in 1982.

When Tony retired as a GP a couple of years later, the couple dedicated their time to cultivating their garden paradise.

Marie recalled: “I used to work on the grass and the borders a little here and there.

“I had to stay in ear shot of the landline and we had four children in five years so we were very busy.

“The garden became a feature to keep them entertained.

“We started in 1992 to develop it. We made the garden safe for the kids and attracted the children.

“After ten years they got more sophisticated. Between 1992 and 1995 we landscaped all of it. We did it all ourselves, without any outside help.

“Tony laid the paths and I was quite happy to wield a pickaxe.

“It’s gradually evolved over the years. In 2000 we built a stream and two years later built a second stream.

“We used to use head torches in the dark evenings and do the work in the garden.

“It’s the Black Country and as we always say it’s where the black country turns green. We have no houses behind us.

“We’ve got a variety of evergreens. We created the garden with lots of views, anchor plants. Spring and autumn are the two most vivid.

“They all turn lovely colours. The main trees we’ve got are maples and acers.

“They’re just brilliant colours. In the winter it’s lots and lots of bulbs. We’ve got colour all year round.

“A lot of neighbours ask advice sometimes, we all have larger gardens. We’ve had no formal training. It’s just been trial and error, a lot of error.

“We know what we need now. You have to look at the plants to see which is being the most dominant. Sometimes you have to meditate.

“We’ve been here for 42 years now and we’ve mastered our garden.

RefCam footage from Crystal Palace's victory over Manchester United has been released.

The footage taken was not included during the live broadcast of the game, as it is set to be included in a program designed to offer, further insight and education into the demands of officiating in the Premier League, which will air at a later date.

However, some clips taken from the RefCam during the game have since been showcased online, including the official's decision to deny Palace a penalty.

After receiving a pass from Eberechi Eze, Tyrick Mitchell skips past Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro and drives towards the United goal.

In a Premier League first, referee Jarred Gillett wore a “RefCam” during Palace v Man Utd.

The use of ‘RefCam’ was a one-off that had the full permission of The IFAB. The filming will form part of an educational program highlighting the important role of the referee.

Mitchell's run abruptly comes to an end after he collides with Jonny Evans, leading to penalty appeals from the Palace players.

Gillett is having none of it though, and can be heard on the clip immediately remarking upon the collision: 'No no, no way. He's run into him for me. The attacker runs into Evans. That's how I read it.'

The video assistant referee then informs Gillet that VAR is conducting a check for a possible penalty before promptly informing him that they were confident that a foul had not taken place.

Other fascinating clips from the footage shown on the Premier League's website included Gillet issuing pre-match instructions to the captains of both clubs.

'Alright lads, you're the captains. I expect you to lead by example and manage your players if you can.' Gillett told Casemiro and Joachim Andersen before kick-off.

While Palace would be denied a penalty, Oliver Glasner's side were in complete control at Selhurst Park.

Michael Olise gave the Eagles the lead 12 minutes before Jean-Philippe Mateta doubled their advantage before the interval.

Mitchell added a third just before the hour mark before Olise added insult to injury to hand Erik ten Hag one of the most humiliating defeats since he arrived at the club in 2022.

While Monday's clash marked the first utilization in a Premier League clash, the concept of officials wearing mounted cameras during games to offer fans a unique perspective is not a new one.

During a pre-season friendly between Chelsea and Brighton in July, referee Rob Jones wore a camera mounted on his chest as the Blues ran out 4-3 winners in Philadelphia.

A chest-mounted camera was also used in the clash between Arsenal and the MLS All-Stars in pre-season, with clips later uploaded online from the referee's perspective.

A head-mounted RefCam has also been introduced in the German top flight this season, with match official Daniel Schlager wearing one during the 2-2 draw between Frankfurt and Wolfsburg in February.
