_four-in-10-adults-have-gone-at-least-three-days-without-talking-to-another-person-face-to-face.jpg "More than four in 10 adults have gone at least three days without talking to another person face-to-face, according to research.<br/><br/>A study of 2,000 adults discovered 40 per cent have also experienced the feeling of being lonely – despite constantly being surrounded by other people. <br/><br/>Those aged 18-24 were found to suffer the most (60 per cent), with 38 per cent of women feeling this way compared to just 30 per cent of men. <br/><br/>It also emerged 28 per cent have felt lonely while at a social event, while a quarter of worker have felt alone at their job.<br/><br/>Despite this, 43 per cent believe bonding with someone through a shared experience would make them feel less alone.<br/><br/>The study was commissioned by dance fitness brand, Zumba, which has documented two people who have experienced loneliness as they took part in a class together for the first time.<br/><br/>A spokesperson said: “Loneliness can affect anybody, and our research has revealed that it is not exclusively linked with being physically alone.<br/><br/>“Despite having plenty of social contact, many people still experience feelings of loneliness, probably as a result of lacking real human connection.<br/><br/>“This connection can come from a shared experience, such as a group fitness class. <br/><br/>“It is no surprise that many friendships are formed in classes like ours, but what is less obvious and perhaps more powerful, is the positive effect of simply sharing the class experience for an hour with others whom you may not have formally met or spoken to.”<br/><br/>The study also found only 14 per cent ‘often’ talk to others about their feelings of loneliness, as 62 per cent believe there is a stigma around it. <br/><br/>But 35 per cent find it difficult to talk to or interact with new people, despite a fifth claiming to be sociable.<br/><br/>And 44 per cent believe that even with lots of friends, it is still possible to experience a feeling of loneliness.<br/><br/>Confidence, anxiety levels and sleep are the top things those polled, via OnePoll.com, feel are negatively impacted from being lonely. <br/><br/>While 42 per cent said their sleep worsens when they feel lonely, and 29 per cent see themselves as less attractive – with diet being affected for three in 10. <br/><br/>And 32 per cent would benefit from being part of a community or group with a third claiming a personal accomplishment would help reduce their feelings of loneliness.<br/><br/>Psychologist Anjula Mutanda, who has partnered with Zumba to help combat loneliness, said: “Human beings are by our very nature social beings and psychological research asserts that we need to belong, to relate to each other and feel connected to other people - this is how we survive and thrive. <br/><br/>“Therefore, feeling disconnected or cut-off from quality relationships with others, can negatively impact our mental and physical health – something which has been highlighted in the research. <br/><br/>“Experiencing loneliness can come in different forms and is uniquely felt by each of us.")

Yet nearly three-quarters (72%) still wish they engaged in creative activities more often. <br/><br/>This may be because Americans use writing (14%), painting (12%) and drawing or doodling (10%) as a way to alleviate and combat stress. <br/><br/>In fact, along with bonding with friends and family (24%) and sharing their creativity with others (27%), Americans find relaxing or relieving stress (22%) as one of their top three motivators for engaging in creative activities.<br/><br/>Regardless of how respondents categorized themselves, 77% admitted they'd be more likely to explore their creativity if they were more confident in their abilities.<br/><br/>Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Sharpie® and Paper Mate®, the survey also explored all of the ways Americans are basking in their creativity and found that many are thinking outside the box. <br/><br/>When asked to define “creative,” the top ways Americans described the word vary — 65% defined it as either “expressing yourself” or “coming up with new ideas,” yet 43% still associate creativity with artistic ability. <br/><br/>“It’s inspiring to see just how many Americans consider themselves creative, though it’s clear that there is more creativity to be unleashed,” said Gina Lazaro, Vice President, Brand Management, Sharpie and Paper Mate. “In addition to a lack of creative confidence, people are looking for encouragement to be creative from people they care about (44%), more practice (43%) and products that aid with creativity (36%) to help them. With the right tools in-hand Americans can overcome some of those barriers to creativity and improve their wellbeing.”<br/><br/>The survey revealed that respondents felt the most creative at age 25, on average, though 20% harnessed the most creativity during their childhood. But this wasn’t the case for Gen Zers surveyed — almost half (49%) of the 90 Gen Z respondents are in their “creativity era” and feel most creative at their current age.<br/><br/>Overall, 75% of respondents agree that their creativity is a reflection of their personal brand. This was especially true for the youngest generation, as 94% of Gen Z respondents agree.<br/><br/>Almost one in five (18%) of all respondents engage in creative activities daily, while another 37% do so weekly, and noon is their peak creative hour.<br/><br/>Results also revealed that the youngest generation is perhaps most immersed in their creative side. Two in five Gen Zers surveyed (41%) participate in creative activities every single day.<br/><br/>“Results revealed that an astounding 77% of respondents admit they’d be more inclined to explore their creativity if they were more confident in their abilities,” said Lazaro. “Whether it’s simple activities like doodling on the margins of a paper or adding color to your calendar, creative confidence can be built in small ways on an everyday basis.”<br/><br/>Survey methodology:<br/>This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Sharpie and Paper Mate between Dec. 21 and Dec. 25, 2023. Yet nearly three-quarters (72%) still wish they engaged in creative activities more often. <br/><br/>This may be because Americans use writing (14%), painting (12%) and drawing or doodling (10%) as a way to alleviate and combat stress. <br/><br/>In fact, along with bonding with friends and family (24%) and sharing their creativity with others (27%), Americans find relaxing or relieving stress (22%) as one of their top three motivators for engaging in creative activities.<br/><br/>Regardless of how respondents categorized themselves, 77% admitted they'd be more likely to explore their creativity if they were more confident in their abilities.<br/><br/>Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Sharpie® and Paper Mate®, the survey also explored all of the ways Americans are basking in their creativity and found that many are thinking outside the box. <br/><br/>When asked to define “creative,” the top ways Americans described the word vary — 65% defined it as either “expressing yourself” or “coming up with new ideas,” yet 43% still associate creativity with artistic ability. <br/><br/>“It’s inspiring to see just how many Americans consider themselves creative, though it’s clear that there is more creativity to be unleashed,” said Gina Lazaro, Vice President, Brand Management, Sharpie and Paper Mate. “In addition to a lack of creative confidence, people are looking for encouragement to be creative from people they care about (44%), more practice (43%) and products that aid with creativity (36%) to help them. With the right tools in-hand Americans can overcome some of those barriers to creativity and improve their wellbeing.”<br/><br/>The survey revealed that respondents felt the most creative at age 25, on average, though 20% harnessed the most creativity during their childhood. But this wasn’t the case for Gen Zers surveyed — almost half (49%) of the 90 Gen Z respondents are in their “creativity era” and feel most creative at their current age.<br/><br/>Overall, 75% of respondents agree that their creativity is a reflection of their personal brand. This was especially true for the youngest generation, as 94% of Gen Z respondents agree.<br/><br/>Almost one in five (18%) of all respondents engage in creative activities daily, while another 37% do so weekly, and noon is their peak creative hour.<br/><br/>Results also revealed that the youngest generation is perhaps most immersed in their creative side. Two in five Gen Zers surveyed (41%) participate in creative activities every single day.<br/><br/>“Results revealed that an astounding 77% of respondents admit they’d be more inclined to explore their creativity if they were more confident in their abilities,” said Lazaro. “Whether it’s simple activities like doodling on the margins of a paper or adding color to your calendar, creative confidence can be built in small ways on an everyday basis.”<br/><br/>Survey methodology:<br/>This random double-opt-in survey of 2,000 general population Americans was commissioned by Sharpie and Paper Mate between Dec. 21 and Dec. 25, 2023.
