Breaking up is a problem because they’re not Gen Z enough to ghost each other. At most, they hang around in the relationship until the love dissipates. Anything to not have “the talk”. In this normal universe, the film is certainly not called Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar, or anything on the lines of Sonu Ke Titu Ki Pyaar Ka Punchnama. But in Luv Ranjan’s universe, this same story is a bitter battle of sexes between a good-looking boy and a gorgeous girl who tries to leave him because – horror of horrors – she likes her independence and his family is too overbearing.<br/><br/>You can’t say Ranjan isn’t trying. If anything, this is him reacting to the criticism – that is, the (correct) accusations of casual misogyny bubble-wrapped in crowd-pleasing comedy – of his previous movies. You see, the women in those movies (Pyaar Ka Punchnama, Sonu Ke Titu Ki Sweety) were scheming, conniving caricatures who forced their boyfriends to choose between bromance and romance. Love was a messy war of ownership. But here, the conflict is centered on the woman’s inability to be cruel and manipulative; she is too evolved to be the quintessential Luv Ranjan heroine. (Coincidentally, actress Shraddha Kapoor’s breakout film, from 2011, was called Luv Ka The End). Her Nisha in this film is so nice that, rather than force poor Rohan (Ranbir Kapoor) to choose between his family and her, she attempts to do the nobler thing: Gaslight him into believing he’s the issue. Nisha would rather have Rohan reject her than the other way around. You see, her dishonesty is merely an expression of compassion. This is Luv Ranjan being progressive.<br/><br/>Never mind that Rohan, like his Kartik Aaryan-esque predecessors, decides to turn her predicament into a game. At stake is the incorruptible Indian idea of marrying not just the person, but also the family. In the pink corner lies Rohan’s courage to go from cold Casanova to heartbreaking martyr, and his pride of being a Momma’s Boy. In the blue corner lies Nisha’s reluctance to sacrifice her own ambitions at the altar of Rohan’s Barjatya-shaped love. There can be only one winner. At one point, he subjects Nisha to a sexist rant about women and jobs – except that he’s only pretending to be a horrible man. He’s pretending to be a Kabir Singh so that nobody blames her. For a moment, I was almost impressed by Luv Ranjan’s self-awareness to use toxic masculinity as a smokescreen.

I know the geography like a native should and yet, I watched Shreya Dev Dube’s skilled camerawork with open-mouthed wonder. Thar’s cinematography is its hero. The desiccated terrain, the barren hills, the omnipresent dust, and the aridity of it all is so palpable, that you can feel the acute lack. Of water, vegetation, humanity. Dubey’s prowess does not just provide the right setting for the drama to unfold, it gives the film its true protagonist and thence the title.<br/><br/>The other thing that stands out about Thar is its depiction of brutality. It’s as savage and unapologetic as the acts themselves. This Netflix film is disturbingly graphic. Even by the standards of Westerns and revenge dramas. Violence begets violence, but be warned, this one shows it all—the severing of body parts, the mutilation, the slow torture, the immolation—up close and in distressing detail.<br/><br/>At the heart of it all is Inspector Surekha Singh, a weather-beaten cop six months away from retirement, played with inimitable swag by Anil Kapoor. His official rank does not justify his acumen for his job and his spirit to do it well. Dissatisfied with his unremarkable, middling career, he wants to go out with a bang. And soon enough, an opportunity plays out. There’s a shootout involving cross-border drug smuggling and a local man is found hanging from a tree, inhumanly mutilated. Surekha spurs into action.

A murder is committed, a contract killing is issued, double crossings become the order of the day, betrayals are executed at the blink of an eye, and a point comes where you cannot pick the good from the bad, the evil from the righteous and the tame from the wild.<br/><br/>A sharp tongued detective R.D., getting wise on the proceedings, starts an intriguing investigation with his brainless bimbo assistant Mini, and the story starts to move at a breakneck speed, full of unexpected twists and turns making the climax of the movie impossible to predict. A back drop of horse racing, the beautiful locales of Durban and edge of the seat excitement are the crux of Race.<br/>Ranvir (Saif Ali Khan) is a successful horse breeder with a history of training and showing winning race horses in South Africa. Rajiv (Akshaye Khanna), Ranvir's brother, is also in the racing world, but he is less cutthroat in his job and, as a result, has not produced the same number of winning ponies. However, Rajiv shows his prickly side when he steals Ranvir's girlfriend, Sonia (Bipasha Basu), and hatches a nefarious plot to take over his sibling's thriving business as well.<br/>
