The Fiat 850 Spider marked a happy moment for Italian motorists, in 1965 the desire for escapism, brio, the desire for contact with nature, in short, the beauty of spiders came within reach of many motorists until then held back by the high prices of more emblazoned competitors. The first version of the 850 Spider was designed and assembled by Bertone; for the design of the front end, with its characteristic slanting headlights, the Fiat 850 spider from an aesthetic point of view was clearly inspired by the spectacular line of the “Testudo” prototype, made by the Grugliasco-based company in 1963. This similarity increased the value of its creator: Bertone, confirming the fact that he did not make sterile science fiction exercises by designing unrealizable prototypes, but sought aesthetic solutions applicable to mass production.
