_blessing-of-the-hops-prayer-at-hogs-back-brewery.webp "Hogs Back Brewery blesses hop garden, continues ‘beating the bounds' tradition<br/><br/>Surrey-based Hogs Back Brewery recently held its annual Hop Blessing at its brewery and hop garden in Tongham. Around 100 people gathered in the evening sunshine to enjoy the ceremony and the ‘beating the bounds' walk, back as part of the event for a second year.<br/><br/>The Hop Blessing took place on Ascension Day (9 May), the day on which crop blessings were traditionally held for centuries. Rev. Claire Holt, of St Paul's Church in Tongham, blessed the crops and, with Hogs Back Brewery managing director Rupert Thompson, led guests on the walk around the 8.5-acre hop garden.<br/><br/>Blessing of crops was observed in rural communities in a bid to encourage a bountiful harvest.Hogs Back revived the tradition in 2014 when they planted their original hop garden over the road from the brewery and continued it when they relocated to the current, larger site.Currently, the 6,000 hop plants in the Hogs Back garden are climbing up strings, spurred by the recent rainfall, and the brewery is hoping for an ample crop to harvest in late August. <br/><br/>Beating the bounds similarly took place around Ascension Day, when the priest would lead a group around the parish boundaries, as a way of instilling this vital information: your parish dictated how much tax you paid, and where you could be buried, for example.The ‘beating the bounds' name may have its origins in a tradition of beating children's heads at each of the boundary stones to drive home the information - a part of the custom that Hogs Back is not observing!<br/><br/>Rev. One sunny afternoon, a group of friends and I decided to bring a bunch of colorful balloons to a local park. The sky was clear, and a gentle breeze was perfect for our plans.<br/><br/>As soon as we reached the park, we started blowing up the balloons. We had all sorts of colors: red, blue, yellow, green, and purple. The balloons added a vibrant touch to our small gathering. Once we had enough balloons, someone suggested a game of balloon keep-up. The aim was simple: to keep the balloon up in the air as long as possible without letting it touch the ground.<br/><br/>We formed a circle and started tapping the balloon to each other. Laughter filled the air as we jumped and dived to keep the balloon aloft. The game was not only fun but also turned into a light workout as we ran around, stretching our arms high or lunging to save a balloon from hitting the grass.<br/><br/>After several rounds of keep-up, we took a short break to catch our breath and sip some water. Then, we decided to try another game: balloon tag. In this game, one person was 'it' and had to tag others by hitting them gently with a balloon. This game was even more energetic and hilarious, with everyone scampering and dodging around trying not to get tagged. The person who was 'it' changed frequently, keeping the game dynamic and inclusive.<br/><br/>As the sun began to set, casting a golden glow over the park, we ended our games. We sat down on the grass, sharing snacks and stories, surrounded by the remnants of popped balloons and the few that remained intact, bobbing gently in the evening breeze.<br/><br/>Playing with balloons reminded us of the joy of simple pleasures and the beauty of spending unstructured time with friends in the great outdoors. It was a memorable day that left us all feeling a bit more connected and a lot more joyful.")
