Description:
Saundersfoot Sailing Club had the honour of hosting the 2024 Saundersfoot New Year’s Day Swim presentation - recognising those that make it the largest Festive 'dash and splash' event in the UK.
NYDS Chairman, Chris Williams welcomed and thanked everyone for attending, along with the hardworking 'volunteer' committee members, as without their commitment and dedication it wouldn’t be possible to hold such a large scale event.
Also thanked, were the army of volunteers who assist year on year; the marshals that are operating; the water safety team who brave the elements; the emergency services, in particular Tenby Fire Station who have given up their time for over 20 years; the bucket collectors who help raise as much money as possible; the 2,500 swimmers who entered the water (and raised personal sponsorship); and finally, the spectators, who help to make it such an enjoyable spectacle.
Much praise was also given to the many organisations and businesses who assist: The RNLI, Tenby Surf Link, Pembrokeshire Paddlers, St Johns Ambulance, Saundersfoot Sailing Club, Police, The Odley Family (who keep the volunteer army and spectators refreshed), Pembrokeshire County Council and our event partners Saundersfoot Harbour, Hean Castle Estate, Saundersfoot Beach and Saundersfoot Community Council.

Chris said that the organisers were overwhelmed with the response, with just over 2,500 registered to enter online, raising in excess of £11,000!
Sponsors always play an integral part in the NYDS’ success and without their support, there would be no event. Thanked for their continued support and generosity were: Ocean Beach Grill Ltd; Neil Finlay Cars; S'foot Sports & Social Club; S'foot Beach Company; Fisher Family Builders; The Stone Crab;Tazzrock; Big Brums; Pro Waste; CBS; Janz Broadfield Farm; Pembrokeshire Laundry; Sterling Construction; Capitan Property Services; The Silver Lily; Trueform Ltd; M&M Windows;Lewis & Lewis Solicitors; Sunnyvale Caravan Site; Folly Farm; Broughton Caravans Ltd; Scaffold 2000; Fussell Builders; The Royal Oak; Elston Construction; The Snug; Saundersfoot Harbour; Hean Castle Estate; Saundersfoot Community Council; Travel Chapter;Mike Wealleans; Sue's Pantry; Rhodri Lewis; Welsh Coast Maintenance; Castle Homes; Caldey Construction.

During the presentation 45 charities and organisations received donations with a further 10 charities receiving swimmer sponsorship directly.
Chris added: \

Refugee Festival Scotland 2024 launch

Refugee Festival Scotland has announced an exciting line-up of events sharing the stories of people and communities who have settled in Scotland.
In a year of terrible conflicts that’s seen millions of people around the world forced from their homes, the festival brings together people from different backgrounds in friendship and
solidarity. The theme of this year’s festival is RISE, to honour the resilience of people who are rebuilding their lives in safety in Scotland.
More than 130 events will take place across Scotland from 14-23 June. The diverse programme - our largest ever - includes contributions from artists and performers who came
to Scotland seeking refugee protection, along with the communities that have welcomed them.

Refugee Festival Scotland has something for everyone, from music and dance, DJs and drag queens, food and drink, football tournaments and family-friendly picnics. The line-up brings people from different backgrounds and cultures together to meet, mix and get to know
each other better. Scottish Refugee Council Chief Executive, Sabir Zazai said: ““The last year has been incredibly tough for people in the refugee community. It’s important to make time for moments of joy, connect with one another and revel in not only what we have in common but
also what makes us all unique.
“The festival is an opportunity to come together and share stories, celebrate each other’s culture and learn more about our new neighbours.
“Together, we can rise above the hostile environment and find strength in our communities.”
Refugee Festival Scotland Manager, Mónica Laiseca said: “Packed with unique events and exceptional talent, the festival honours the resilience and courage of New Scots and celebrates a vision for a Scotland where everyone can blossom and has equal opportunity to thrive.

“At a particularly dire time for refugees and asylum seekers living in our communities, our festival puts forward an empowering message of welcome and makes visible the support that is overwhelmingly present and active across Scottish society.”
Elina, a Refugee Festival Scotland ambassador who travelled from Ukraine to Scotland, said: “We are spreading a message that anyone can rise out of any circumstances they have faced in their own life since unfortunately most refugees experience the worst things that can
happen to any human. We can share our experience to inspire other people too.”
Highlights include a collaboration between the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Refugee Festival Scotland to stage a special family-friendly concert celebrating the power of a good song. Three Glasgow-based community choirs will perform their most-loved songs
accompanied by an 18-piece ensemble from the RSNO. Yorkshire Post photographer, Tony Johnson caught up with the exhibition curator Eli Dawson to get a first look at the iconic ‘wet shirt’ worn by Colin Firth in the BBC adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, which will be on public display in Halifax, West Yorkshire, from Saturday 25 May 2024.
During Calderdale’s Year of Culture 2024 (CultureDale), fans of the famous lake scene will be able to get up close to the shirt and the rest of the outfit worn by Colin Firth as Mr Darcy. It will be on show for free at Bankfield Museum in Halifax until Tuesday 24 December 2024.
The classic 1995 TV scene saw Mr Darcy dive into a lake and emerge with his shirt wet and clinging to him, only to be unexpectedly confronted by Elizabeth Bennet, who had rejected his marriage proposal. The scene has been voted by many as their favourite and most memorable TV moment of all time.
Calderdale Council successfully bid for the shirt, and other costumes from significant moments in TV and film history, at a London auction by Cosprop in March 2024 which raised money for arts education charity, the Bright Foundation.
The shirt is accompanied by other key items from Mr Darcy’s outfit, including the breeches, coat, waistcoat and cravat – all on display in Bankfield Museum’s accessible Oak Gallery on the ground floor.
The other items bought at the auction are due to go on display in a new exhibition in 2025, based around costume in TV and film. They include the Gentleman Jack outfit worn by Suranne Jones, the yellow pelisse from the 2020 film adaptation of Jane Austen’s Emma, two outfits from Downton Abbey, and the King and Queen’s outfits from The King’s Speech. There will also be opportunities for learning and skills development linked to textiles and the making of the costumes.
Bankfield Museum is free to visit, from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am - 4pm.
