Description: When Elizabeth “Betty” Dorn of Shrewsbury in Monmouth County was born in 1760, nearly all New Jersey people of African descent were enslaved. While it is unclear if she was born enslaved or free, Dorn was a free woman later in life and was able to acquire property of her own, including this short gown.
