Joseph was at school in Ghana when war broke out. In 1943 he joined the army and would go on to serve in the 82nd West African Division. When the division was sent to India Joseph went through intense training before being deployed to Burma where he would serve alongside Gurkha and British forces as part of the Fourteenth Army.
